Planned Server Software Upgrades

A planned server wide software upgrade is on the cards, and if its not done by June 2008 then an automated system will push a part upgrade which could break current web services. 🙁

Server Software which will be upgraded is as follows:

  • PHP 4.7.1 => PHP 5.x.x
  • Pear 1.7.x => Pear 1.7.x
  • Zend Engine 1 => Zend Engine 2.1
  • WordPress 2.1 => WordPress 2.3.x
  • MediaWiki 1.6.9 => MediaWiki 1.11.x
  • MySQL 4.1.21 => MySQL 5.x.x

The process may take a week or more (see comments), and some sections of the web server will be reverted into maintenance mode pages upon err until resolved. The upgrade process will start this weekend from friday (7th-8th March – when all backups are re-aquired, and includes over 500 Meg of databases with less than 1% data, a massive house cleaning mess, etc)

Some KitCAD i3 functions may be affected during the planned upgrades; OOo SXD compression requires PHP Pear, and OpenID logins require OpenIDEnabled PHP scripts. Both these functions are expected to work with a PHP5 enabled web server. The very good news is that a 3D solution could be included with KitCADi3 sooner rather than later.

With the upgrades being completed; Administrators installing KitCADi3 will no longer be confronted with tested working PHP4 scripts and PHP5 installers (most WAMP/Easy/XX all-in-one server packages are now pre-bundled with PHP5 setups).

    Installed PHP Version 5.2.5 which includes Zend Engine v2.2.0, and Mysql 5.0.45 in about 5 seconds… (not touching mysql databases yet)

    Some additional new PHP5 play things are:
    Json 1.2.1.
    Bigger and better hashing.
    PDO drivers (SQLight)
    SQLight library 2.8.17
    PHP reflection.c v1.164.2.x
    SPL support
    Many updated PHP Variables, pcre library (preg_match), and GD 2.0.34 compatible

    The PHP5 configure command used was: ./configure’ ‘–prefix=/usr’ ‘–host=i686-pc-linux-gnu’ ‘–mandir=/usr/share/man’ ‘–infodir=/usr/share/info’ ‘–datadir=/usr/share’ ‘–sysconfdir=/etc’ ‘–localstatedir=/var/lib’ ‘–prefix=/usr/services/vux’ ‘–enable-track-vars’ ‘–enable-inline-optimization’ ‘–with-zlib’ ‘–with-openssl’ ‘–enable-bcmath’ ‘–with-bz2’ ‘–with-curl’ ‘–enable-dba’ ‘–enable-sockets’ ‘–enable-dbx’ ‘–enable-ftp’ ‘–with-gettext’ ‘–with-iconv’ ‘–enable-exif’ ‘–enable-mbstring’ ‘–with-pic’ ‘–without-pear’ ‘–enable-cli’ ‘–enable-cgi’ ‘–prefix=/usr/services/vux/php5’ ‘–with-mysql=/usr/services/vux/mysql’ ‘–with-inifile’ ‘–enable-force-cgi-redirect’ ‘–with-db4’ ‘–with-flatfile’ ‘–enable-calendar’ ‘–with-readline’ ‘–with-gdbm’ ‘–with-gd’ ‘–with-jpeg-dir=/usr/lib’ ‘–with-png-dir=/usr/lib’ ‘–with-freetype-dir=/usr/lib’ ‘–with-mime-magic’ ‘–with-dom’ ‘–with-dom-xslt’ ‘–with-dom-exslt’ ‘–with-mcrypt’ ‘–with-mhash’ ‘–with-pspell’ ‘–with-xmlrpc’ ‘–enable-wddx’ ‘–enable-xslt’ ‘–disable-path-info-check’ ‘–enable-fastcgi’ ‘–with-xslt-sablot’ ‘–with-zip’ ‘–build=i686-pc-linux-gnu’

    Mediawiki and WordPress seem un-affected but will be upgraded anyway…

    Pear time.. but Pear 1.7.2 didn’t install… (the update was ignored, 1.7.1 is sok)

    The Pear package (php GD) image test pages above are not included/linked-in with KitCADi3

    Mediawiki files were updated (re-installed)… Special:version page now shows:

    * MediaWiki: 1.11.2
    * PHP: 5.2.5-dev (cgi-fcgi)
    * MySQL: 4.1.21

    The security fix for version 1.6.9 is still being used (no API, its disabled)

  63. Admin Says:

    Started initial limited deployment of +50kb web pages scripting supporting base 64 images (using recycled rX scripting; deployment targeting app’s landing pages first – then rolling out to other pages depending on client Browser histories). Previous web pages were about 38kb in size uncompressed; New web pages include a +10kb-15kb size addition depending on requirements. These html pages while larger will then be compressed for receiving by most modern web Browsers and are approximately 25kb in size when transmitted. Having graphics encoded within the html saves the process of at least +5 round trips triggered by the client which waits for the server response before any graphic files are rendered. The new pages will render faster and display as intended with most 3rd party provided (or below the fold) content rendering after page load.

    Will be retesting/editing some server/site/s and pages/code over the weekend, or as required and if available. Planned maintenance from 31st September 2016 to 1st October 2016. See reported issues for more information.

    Because this issue effects some forms of processing (like that of to publish) – The ability to process new information has been disabled until further notice or another method of processing is designed and deployed to replace LWP usage within code that generates the processing results. Users can still access accounts and delete information; The server ability to publish edited or new information has been disabled (only blank pages will be published)

    Some PEAR applications are also effected by changes and may no longer function.

    Proxy services (via HTACCESS redirects) have also seen issues and as such some changes have been made that ‘revert backward’ to the underlying structure which is continuing to resolve client browser requests and is expected to provide a suitable workaround until another form of proxy is deployed (where required). The ‘pretty’ URL/URI’s will result in 302 redirection in the place of a proxy result until a suitable replacement is deployed. This HTTP Proxy services issues differs to the one with HTTPS / SSL Proxy Service that has also been disabled however it was disabled by the hosting provider moving services to a new provider.

    Made changes to

    Re-enabled page publishing and removed several scripting bugs. The PHP rewrite of the backend processing has been fully completed and tested on multiple platforms.

    Page publishing works 98% of the time, 2% of the time it returns a blank page for which there is no reason as to this result found online with this server. Running the same tests offline showed page publishing is working at 100%. The only work-around for a blank page result is to re-edit the page and re-publish.

    Another issue exists if a user deletes a published page and then attempts to re-publish the same page – a 301 page may be returned to the users web browser and no publishing will occur as a result. A 302 page is now issued to replace the 301 page function (and cancel the auto-forwarding). The only work-around at this time is to attempt another publishing of the page.

    Several smaller issues existed in CGI code, and some client side javascript but these have also been resolved.
